  • Restoring the surface water bodies like rivers, storm drains, lakes, ponds etc. to their natural state so that they are able to catch and hold the maximum amount of rainwater.
  • Constructing improvised structures that are researched in-house by our team of Environmental scientists, Geologists, Hydro geologists, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experts, across open expanses of land to maximize percolation of water through the soil strata and into the ground water aquifers.

The main principle behind restoring the rivers and other water resources is creating recharge structures like boulder check, recharge shaft, recharge well, subsurface dyke, recharge bore well, de-siltation, & farm ponds etc. Along a suitable stream network, these structures accelerate the natural process of groundwater recharge.

Afforestation has been one of the major concern of our foundation that we aim to entail with this project. Planting trees is crucial to conserve water and rejuvenate the water sources around the lands and dense forests. Combating the challenges of climate change and halting soil erosion can only be possible with the plantation of abundant trees. So far, our team has planted more than 6.5 lac trees under river rejuvenation projects.

Water-stressed situations in India have already covered 54% of the sub-continent with dried-up water channels. In a country where most of the population depends on agriculture for sustenance, only 20% of their water needs are fulfilled by rainwater. River rejuvenation project have benefitted farmers and families with sufficient availability of clean water in the vicinity to cater to their agricultural and consumption needs.

The enormous benefit of this multi-pronged approach has proved to be a boon for farmers and residents of more than 19,400 villages in India. With the sufficient availability of water, groundwater levels have been increased, leading to optimization in crop production, multiple crops every year. Reduced crop spoilage & increased soil fertility has doubled farmers' income.

The aim has been to reduce the runoff velocity of rainwater so that soil moisture can be well retained. The structures have helped to augment groundwater recharge into the dried-up fracture and prevent base flow from flowing downstream. Using this approach, our experts and volunteers have covered an area of more than 59,000 sq km by enhancing the water level on the upstream side.

The catchment areas in most of the states in India are overexploited. The river damage had become so enormous that several strategies were planned to analyze damage restoration. Some states worst hit by water scarcity include Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. River rejuvenation project by the Art of Living has benefited all the people residing in villages across the river basins, resulting in increased land usage and labour employment.

Community Engagement and Employment Generation

River rejuvenation empowers local communities through capacity building frameworks. Under the guidance of the Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the Art of Living's River rejuvenation project has led to massive upliftment in land fertility and availability. As a result, many villagers disguised as employed in the rural belts have been rewarded with opportunities to work on fertile, arable lands. More than 6.5 lac days of rural employment have been generated.
